28th of September- Our Learning this Week!

We looked at the nets of 3D shapes and now we are starting to recognise them.
We had a group challenge to see which nets of pyramids worked.
Here are the nets that worked and didn't work.                    E is testing a pyramid.

Here is T cutting out the pyramid net ready to test it.

M is folding the net to test it                                            The 'Sausage Dogs' testing the nets.

We learned about mummification, we used a cool website to learn about it.
We had to put the sequence in order. We enjoyed learning about mummies.
Some people thought it was really disgusting!
Here is the website we used...

We learned how to put commas in lists such as .....

It is the weekend and we are going to go to granny's, look after Bobby, play x-box, get
new pet budgies, swim, play football, read, play fiddle, go for a sleepover and go and visit folk.

Here are some photos from this week:

We made Egyptian 'shadufs' - a device that the Ancient Egyptians used to get water out of the Nile.

This is an illustration of a shaduf used in the Nile.
We designed 'death masks' for mummies. This is Toby's.
We wrote our names in hieroglyphs - can you guess whose name this is?

21st of September

This week we have been learning about shapes. We have been learning their names - such as:  octagon,
trapezium, rhombus and hexagon. We have also been learning about their properties-  e.g. How many sides does it have? How many diagonals does it have? How many vertices (corners) does it have? We have enjoyed making an Egyptian pyramid, in 3D. We played a game called 'Fling the Teacher' which was very popular!!  Here is the link:

We were playing on Spelling City trying to learn our words. If we all get 100% Mrs Reid
will dance on the table!

P5 went to the Tag rugby festival in Kirkwall today. It was a bit wet but fun!

14th September

We have been learning about speech marks. We put words into speech bubble and then wrote them
in sentences.
In music we learned the Olympic tune " First Steps"  played by the band Elbow, we played guitar, keyboard, fiddle, drum and tuned percussion. Mrs Reid heard it from up the corridor and thought it sounded rather nice.
We were look Egypt on the map of the World.
We have been doing lots of adding in class lately, next week we will all be learning about shape.

Our Learning this week

We learned that the Egyptians had three seasons- flooding, harvesting and planting. We drew Egyptian style drawings of ploughing, planting and harvesting.
A lot of us think we know our doubles - some of us can do multiples of ten- 7+7=14 so 70+70= 140.
We will practise more next week.
We made a list of family names such as cousin, sister, nephew and so on and discussed what we were.
Next week we will look at what they all mean. For example  Andrew is a cousin, a nephew, brother, son and a grandson. Millie is a daughter, a cousin, a sister, grand-daughter, a great-grand-daughter and a niece..
We heard the story of the GOOD SAMARITAN we think the message is if someone is in need help them, and care for them no matter who they are.
Ella thought it would be nice to have a link to the puppet show we watched about the Good Samaritan so here it is.

New Class Mascot

We had a vote to decide which type of animal would be a suitable class mascot, dog won by a considerable margin. After that we voted on the type of dog and the West Highland Terrier was a true favourite.
Mrs Reid has now ordered the dog and all we have to do now is decide upon a name!
